This slide presentation outlines a study on radium removal using hydrous manganese oxides (HMOs) that was funded by the AWWA Research Foundation and done by the University of Iowa, Water Chemistry Group. Topics outlined include: principles of adsorption; significance of different oxides; characteristics of HMOs; the HMO process; formation of HMOs; mass balances indicate more than 100% radium removal; TONKA pilot system; secular equilibrium; radium release (re-equilibration) within distribution system; disposal of radium bearing sludges; and, adequate pilot testing.
