Full Description

The ultrafiltration process now widely applied all over the world for drinkingwater production, has shown rapid development during the last ten years. Theincrease in ultrafiltration plant size has resulted in an important increase ininvestment. The reduction of the membrane process cost per installed m2 , thanksto standardization and production growth, has not, however, been enough to keepthe ultrafiltration process competitive. Degr¿mont Company answered the reductioncost objectives by developing a new product based on a new module and an improvedinnovative system. This new product was specially adapted to the huge scaleultrafiltration plants. The new 450 mm diameter module has a filtration surfacearea of 125 m2, which is twice the size of the previous 300 mm (64 m2). The newmodule is made with the same materials as the 300 mm module, which has given goodresults up to now and during the last 12 years, in terms of mechanical andchemical resistance. The hydraulic design is based on the symmetricalorganization of the fiber bundles around a central permeate collector, whichallows a 40 to 50 % reduction in the size of the foot print. The new product hasbeen evaluated through semi industrial scale trials performed on the Seine riverdownstream of Paris in 1999. These trials confirm the Ultrazur 450 performancesin term of water quality and production capacity. Furthermore, operatingcondition like backwash, cleaning frequency and cross flow velocity wereoptimized. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
