The primary aim of this research is to increase the knowledgeand understanding of the adherence of bacteria to filter media and thus minimize the number of bacteria entering the filtered water. There is definite attachment of bacteria to sand media, particularly at the top of the filter bed. A water-only backwash did not remove bacteria that had attached during the filter run, however, collapse-pulsing appears to be an efficient method in decreasing the number of bacteria attached to the media after a filter run.
