Over 1,000 miles of vinyl lined asbestos cement (AC) pipe were installed primarily inthe northeast United States between 1968 and 1980. In early 1980, it was discoveredthat the vinyl lining was leaching tetrachloroethylene (PCE), a reported carcinogen,into the water distribution system.
