This article looks at some of the next-generation possibilities with a review of 17 alternatives to vapor-compression technology. Two of the more promising are thermoelastic and membrane heat pump technologies, which are in the RD stages. The authors say that while the technologies show promise, further development will be required to demonstrate their ability to compete with conventional vapor-compression products.
