The expansion tank is a basic component of hydronic heating and cooling systems, yet problems associated with over-pressurization can be traced back to an improperly sized expansion tank. This paper provides an explanation of how the expansion tank works, how system pressure varies with tank position, and gives suggested procedures to avoid system problems.
