The author discusses a project in Italy where the current energy directives require that 20% of the energy for the building heating, cooling, and domestic hot water systems be produced by on-site renewable energy, unless the building is served by a district energy plant. He then discusses the guidelines for modeling district energy plants for LEED-NC 2009.
