The environment aboard commercial aircraft is different than that found in other spaces commonly occupied by people. Standard 161-2013 addresses these unique characteristics of aircraft cabin environments as well as characteristics that are common to many other indoor environments.

The revised, 2013 edition of the standard also adds definitions of "commercial aircraft and "pack burn" to Section 3, references a new means to reduce or eliminate potential oil/hydraulic fluid contamination, and provides additional guidance regarding appropriate cleaning procedures for aircraft environmental control systems.
