The Heat Balance Method (HBM) and the Radiant Time Series Method (RTSM) were introduced for cooling load calculations as part of ASHRAE 875-RP. (Pedersen, Fisher et al. 1997; Spitler, Fisher et al. 1997). The HBM had been previously developed for building simulation and applied to energy calculations; the RTSM was developed from scratch as part of 875-RP. Both methods were described in the book, Cooling and Heating Load Calculation Principles. Subsequently, both methods were described in the 2001 and 2005 editions of the ASHRAE Handbook--Fundamentals Volume and in the 5th and 6th Editions of the McQuiston, Parker and Spitler (2000; 2005) HVAC textbook.
