In data center design it is normally assumed that the contained aisles are populated by relatively conformant equipment and that leakage between aisles is minimal. Given real equipment and operational practices, how do they affect the actual performance of the cooling system? This paper highlights a variety of issues that can potentially undermine the containment plan for a data hall in operation. It shows examples of airflows at the room and rack scales that need to be managed to avoid negative consequences for availability, capacity and efficiency. It concludes that end users should be aware of design assumptions in operation.
