Since the 1995 production phaseout of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants in the United States, the national supply of CFCs has depended upon the stockpiles gathered in 1996, and the CFCs reclaimed from existing air-conditioning and refrigerating equipment. The demand for CFCs is determined by the number of operating CFC air-conditioning and refrigeration systems that require refrigerant to replace CFCs lost through leakage and servicing.
