This paper addresses chilled water thermal storage systemsâa review of âmatureâ systems that have been in operation 10 to 15 years or moreâhow they have performed and if they fulfill their promises. These remarks are centered around a major midwestern university hospital thermal storage system with a 2.1 million gal (7,950,000 L) storage tank and covers the original design, economics, operating changes, and experiences over the past few years. It reviews what went right and what went wrong and how the systems designer would address these issues today.
