The current state of cool storage terminology is not clearly defined for design engineers, building owners, and building operations and maintenance (OM) personnel to use. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the development of a descriptive framework for describing and characterizing cool storage operating and control strategies. In contrast to the fairly one-dimensional definition process currently used, this developed framework is a multi-dimensional terminology that includes both a descriptive narrative and a graphical representation. The framework ensures consistency of definitions between the various parties involved in the development and implementation of operating strategies for cool storage systems.
