This paper describes an optimization method for electric-type district heating and cooling plants based on the genetic algorithm (Goldberg 1989). First, in order to examine the characteristics of the genetic algorithm by simulation, a simulated plant is assumed to supply chilled and hot water simultaneously. Second, a pilot plant is actually constructed at a sewage treatment plant for an examination of using low-temperature energy, such as treated sewage, instead of an air heat source. In the pilot plant, the genetic algorithm described in this paper is applied to optimize the operation schedule for on-line processing. Also, the results of this examination are presented.
