Through review of available publications and simple analyses, it is demonstrated that the use of duty cyclers in residential HVAC systems will not bring about a reduction in energy when the indoor conditions are kept unchanged. Duty cyclers will have no effect on resistance heating systems, detrimental effect on compressor-driven systems (air conditioners and heat pumps), and a small, if any, benefit on combustion fired furnaces.
