Full Description

A heat pump system with a nonazeotropic refrigerant mixture was developed for residential use. The heat pump is equipped with a rectifier and reservoir for varying mixture composition, so that heating, cooling, and generation of 185 F (85°C) hot waterâ could be done efficiently. The idea is to adapt a high pressure refrigerant for heating, cooling, and low-temperature hot water generation, while the refrigerant mixture (low pressure) is used for high-temperature hot water generation. Its practical application requires mixing and separating operations before and after the high-temperature hot water generation. Preliminary experiments with an R22/RII4 mixture confirmed that a small packed tower could rectify the refrigerant of the main circuit in a short time. Mixing and separating operations were both smooth and stable. A practical system was then developed and tested. The results showed excellent performance for each operating mode.
